Lancet Review: Omegas & Micronutrients for ADHD

The Lancet published a review online Mar 9, 2023 entitled “Non-pharmacological interventions for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents”, identifying medication-free therapies that showed efficacy and positive outcomes for those with ADHD.

Around 5% of children and adolescents worldwide suffer from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often leading to negative life outcomes and socioeconomic costs. The first generation of ADHD treatments was predominantly pharmacological, but advances in understanding biological, psychological, and environmental factors have expanded the possibilities for non-pharmacological approaches.

The current primary ADHD treatment involves a combination of multicomponent (cognitive) behavior therapy, medication, and caregiver stress reduction. Omega-3 fatty acids showed a consistent modest effect on ADHD symptoms when taken for at least three months. The effects of mindfulness and multinutrient supplements with four or more ingredients were found by the Review to be effective as well.

In our experience, many children (and adults, for that matter) find relief from their ADHD symptoms using a combination of multinutrients in the form of our clinical strength blend, Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN), and Omega-3s. Parents report reduced anxiety symptoms often associated with ADHD and improved focus and attention when using DEN and Omega-3s together.

Daily Essential Nutrients is backed by over 40 independent studies, including several double-blind trials for the safe and effective treatment of mood and mental health disorders. Most recently, two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials found that DEN significantly reduced ADHD symptoms in children in two 8-week trials and at a one-year follow-up.

In addition to ADHD symptoms such as inability to focus and hyperactivity, the researchers evaluated peer conflict, oppositional defiance, and disruptive mood dysregulation in participating children.

In contrast with conventional ADHD treatments, which are known to suppress appetite and cause growth suppression, participants in the DEN group also grew statistically significantly taller (6mm in only 8 weeks) compared to the placebo group.

Three additional double-blind studies are underway on Daily Essential Nutrients for mood and anxiety. While we wait for more encouraging results from these ongoing studies, we are excited to continue to provide an effective non-pharmacological alternative for mental health.
